United Nations still a key actor in peacekeeping

UN peacekeeping activity has increased significantly and its nature has changed since the first UN peacekeeping operation, established in 1956 due to the Suez Crisis. At Suez, the blue berets had a traditional mission to perform: to ensure and monitor cessation of hostilities between the parties and supervise the maintenance of ceasefire.
